By the time Kathryn was in high school, having studied piano, voice, and a little flute, she had committed to memory multiple musicals and was equally inspired by the films of Julie Andrews and the LPs of Roberta Flack, Carole King, and Carly Simon.
John was learning to play piano and trumpet when the Beatles appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show. He subsequently learned to play guitar and formed a high school rock band. (He's the one wearing sunglasses indoors.)
From 1998 to 2013, Kathryn taught piano and children's classes at the Steckman Studio of Music in Oak Park, and since 2003 she has taught piano in her home studio, recently composing short etudes in every key.
John's performance experience includes solo and ensemble work, composition and arrangement. He is the technical assistant as well as the sounding board for Kathryn in her development of the History Singers programs.
